How to write a bilingual menu (English and Spanish)

In the US, a Hispanic restaurant serves customers who speak Spanish, English or both. A well-made bilingual menu removes doubts, speeds up ordering and encourages people who don’t know your cuisine to try it.

Don’t translate the dish name: explain it

“Pupusa revuelta” doesn’t need translating; it needs a description. Keep the original name and add one line in English:

Pupusa revuelta — Handmade corn tortilla stuffed with pork, beans and cheese. Served with curtido and tomato salsa.

A structure that works

  1. Dish name in its original language, in bold.
  2. A short description in English (and in Spanish if the name doesn’t explain it).
  3. Price.
  4. Simple icons where they apply: spicy, vegetarian, gluten-free. Only if true and checked.

Words worth explaining

Curtido, chicharrón, loroco, birria, consomé, horchata, tamal de elote, plátanos fritos… They’re obvious to you; to a new customer they can be the reason not to order. An 8–12 word explanation is enough.

Common mistakes

  • Unchecked machine translation: “chile relleno” turned into “filled chili” without saying with what.
  • Two different menus (one English, one Spanish) with prices or dishes that don’t match.
  • Tiny type from cramming both languages onto one page: use two columns or an extra page instead.

Where to publish it

On your website (as text, not just a PDF), on your Google Business Profile and on delivery apps. Make all three say the same thing. More ideas in 7 mobile menu mistakes.
